DOME CONCERT 2009

Jill writes: THE BIG EVENT FOR JOHN AND HIS MANY ADMIRERS in 2009 was his special concert on June 21st at The Dome Brighton to celebrate his 70th Birthday. Unbelievable that he is 70 !! With friends there from all parts of this country and abroad it was the most wonderful occasion. The good news is that John will be returning there in 2010 to present another concert on SUNDAY 18TH JULY at 2.30pm.

To return to John's 2009 concert , MARRION WELLS, who reviews many concerts for local newspapers and other periodicals wrote: "Throughout its long history the Dome has played host to a vast selection of artistes, yet it must be a very long time since one was received by an audience of almost two thousand with such acclaim as greeted Bighton's home-grown star performer John Mann.

Adjectives 'auspicious', 'momentous' and their like are irrelevant. More appropriate is 'affection' for assuredly that is how John with his sense of humour oft verging on the absurd was received in a programme of over two hours of one-man activity in which never for one second did the entertainment flag."

FOR MORE REPORTS on John's show click on 'What the Papers Say'.

JOHN WROTE in the special Souvenir Brochure produced for the concert: "WELCOME. What a great pleasure it is for me to be spending this time with you this afternoon, for my special birthday show. It means to me one big birthday present that will remain for the rest of my life. Thank you.

Appearing here at the Dome today in itself is very special. The fact that I spent my youth here week after week attending most times when the organ was playing, and for the very famous "Tuesday night at the Dome" shows. This concert hall holds so many memories for me. I appeared one night playing the Piano solo "The Dream of Olwen", a very nervous young man. Mind you I've always been nervous. I come from a nervous family. If my father hadn't been so nervous, I would be 21 by now...instead I'm still nervous and going on 70!! Couldn't resist that joke. I did sit on the organ bench once on that occasion, but didn't know anything about the instrument at that time. Little did I think that I would be playing the organ as a career as well as working with so many of the Act's and stars that used to appear here.

When the Dome was refurbished and the organ re-installed, under the guidance of Michael Maine, there was a feeling of great excitement, we've got our organ back. But signs of the times are proving that its use is very limited because of maintenance cost which was the cause of it's demise in the first place. Of course, public tastes change and our style of entertainment and music in the business world has been put on the back burner. But here I am still going and keeping the organ music alive and well. There's got to be a medal I hear you say!!"

INTERESTING FACTS about The Dome Organ: The organ is a mixture of classical and theatre. It's not a Wurlitzer or Compton but part Christie Organ on the theatre side. John Christie was the owner of Glyndebourne Opera House here in Sussex and his love of organ building was so enthusiastic he joined forces with Hill, Norman & Beard to create the enormous Dome Organ. It took seven years to bring it back to life again.

THE FIRST of the 2010 24th JOHN MANN APPRECIATION SOCIETY ANNUAL TEA PARTIES took place at WORTHING Pavilion Theatre in The Denton Lounge on Wednesday August 4th after John's afternoon show when 65 friends enjoyed a lovely get-together with John. We now look forward to the second Tea Party which will will take place at EASTBOURNE after John's afternoon Show at the Winter Garden on Thursday September 16th in the Congress Restaurant. Always a lovely get-together with John and a chance to meet old and new friends.
